In Mayflower Dreams, Pilgrim history, lifestyle, dialogue, and dreams of religious freedom are realistically displayed through the protagonist's dream story and reality. Rose Hopkins, the protagonist, uses lucid dreaming techniques to travel backwards in time and to connect with her ancestors.
Rose's reality takes place in 2012. Her dream story happens between 1607 and 1621. Rose connects history to her reality through her dream journey with the Pilgrims. She discovers connections between her present and her past, as well as between her reality and her dreams.
In her reality, Rose has problems living in the present. Even though she likes clocks, she is often late. She uses a sampler to look for a watch from one of her ancestors. Her journey includes visiting Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Plantation, and the Mayflower II.
In her dreams, Rose uses lucid dreaming techniques to create a dream story. She meets many Pilgrims, including the Reverend John Robinson, William Bradford, and Myles Standish, whose wild red hair reminds her of her husband, from whom she was separated.
With a doctorate in English/Rhetoric from the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Karen Petit has used her linguistic knowledge to create Pilgrim dialogue and a Pilgrim language glossary section for Mayflower Dreams. As a descendant of the Reverend John Robinson, Karen loves to explore the language, history, culture, and dreams of our Pilgrim ancestors.
